Summers Field2

Summers Field is a community-run orchard established in 2012, on land rented from South Gloucestershire Council, near the centre of the village. It is intended to be a recreational space for the whole community and is freely available every day of the year.

The orchard has been developed as a wildlife friendly space and a space to promote socialising. The orchard is made up of varieties of apple, plum, mulberry and pear trees as well as a Red Oak planted in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and a magnificent Broad-leaved Lime planted in 1897 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Wildflower species that can be found in the field include Snakes Head Fritillary, Cowslip, Common Knapweed, Birds-foot Trefoil, Yellow Rattle and Blue Wild Geranium.

Wildlife is thriving and includes hedgehogs, moths, butterflies and barn owls. There are information boards (funded, in part, by the community to mark the Coronation of King Charles III) that provide information about the flora and fauna that can be seen here, here and here.

There are guidelines for the use of the orchard. Key ones include:

• The field is for use by the whole community and visitors are welcome to enjoy the space and a social space is provided for recreation for picnics and community events;

• Children are welcome to play in the field;

• Dog walkers are welcome to use the field - please ensure your dog is kept on a lead and ensure you clear up and remove any mess from your dog;

• Please use the footpaths or mown paths and take care not to damage the trees.

Summers Field is managed by a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) (Charity Number 1151689), Friends of Summers Field. The founding principles are available here. The Charity is funded through fund-raising events and donations including annual cream teas and an Autumn barn dance. There are regular work parties and an annual harvest leading to the bottling on apple juice that is made available for purchase. Click here for some pictures from 2025.

An AGM is held annually in the spring that is open to members of the community and newsletters are produced annually - see links on the left .
